    The sickling of cells is an unfortunate process for those who experience it. Though you can not help inheriting hemoglobin S, there are a few conditions that increase the sickling of cells. For example, an acidic environment in the bloodstream can cause the sickling process to increase. Also, if your body has more hemoglobin S, then sickle cell production will be more rapid. How do you know if your hemoglobin S is more concentrated? Well, a dehydrated body can cause the density of hemoglobin S to increase. So, keep drinking water!



Prevention

    Avoid passing on sickle cell disease at all! Do not have a baby if you have a sickle cell trait or the disease. It is horrible to pass on such a painful experience to you child. Go to classes, such as genetic counseling, if you need convincing. Basic health needs to be upheld to prevent or slow sickle cell disease. Getting enough oxygen is very important. Living in a clean environment will help with oxygen consumption. Avoid physical activity,emotional stress, smoking, and known sources of infection to keep enough oxygen in the body.You can prevent the sickling of cells by drinking fluids. It is quite simple to drink a glass of water every day, but watch for signs of dehydration, especially in the sun. Treating infections will decrease the possibility of cells sickling also. Finally, physical exams every 3-6 months will keep you updated on the condition of you body.
